A Glass of Wine With You, Sir!
Oct. 13th, 2005 12:44 pmMany thanks to everyone who commented below with congratulations - it's great to be able to move on, and get to grips with my (still relatively new) job, dance classes, and other bits and pieces concerning the start of term. In other news, my Tall Ships bids were approved, so all being well, I'll be doing a Biscay crossing in December, and spending some time in the Balearic Islands come April. Before that, however, I have a trip up to Throssel in mid-November, my Dayskipper Practical in early November in Cornwall.
I've also hit on the idea of trying to train and take the tests for the ECDL (European Computer Driving License) while I'm still working part time as per government mandate, waiting for my work permit to be processed. I'm still a university member, so I can train through the OUCS, and testing costs about £60. The training looks relatively straightforward - mostly it's a review of word processing, web, and database skills, many of which I'm already familiar with, but a few of which I could use a better understanding. My question, to anyone involved in computer or information fields - is this qualification one you recognize, and do you think it useful - in essence, is it worth anything? Training is free, so I can obtain that in any case, but I'd have to pay my own testing fees, so I'm reluctant to put up the cash unless there's some additional benefit.
Otherwise, I'm hoping to have people over on Friday evening, if any of you are free - say meet at the Angel and Greyhound around 8:00pm? - assuming I can get the Graduate Common Room, we can adjourn there after a bit, and I'll provide cake, sweets, tea and coffee as well. Comment here if you can make it.
Also, I'll be going to Portsmouth (again!) on Friday, 21 October 2005, as I've secured a ticket to be on the HMS Victory for the morning commemoration. I plan to stay over that night, and if any of you were interested in driving down on Saturday, 22 October 2005, I have two additional tickets for entry to the Historic Harbour that will expire at the end of the month, and which I'm happy to provide to drivers in exchange for a lift back home. There will be special festivities the whole weekend, and I also know a great little restaurant in Southsea for lunch - so, shall we organize something? Give me a call.
Finally, I'm going to resurrect Napoleonic Nights, starting this Sunday at 7:00pm. My tentative selection is Pirates of the Caribbean, because I like it, and it's been too long since I've seen it, but I'm open to suggestions and discussion for an alternative film. But, since this post has gotten too long already, I'll recap the details in a post following.
