Make It So
Oct. 21st, 2006 01:48 amBack from Cornwall by way of London, in a week which involved travel by boat, coach and train - with transport in general being difficult. Unfortunately, strong southerly and southwesterly gales kept us in the Fal for the week, as well as being storm bound in Falmouth for a few days, so I was unable to take a turn actually skippering the cutter, and I was unable to complete a passage for the purposes of completing my dayskipper practical. On the positive side, I was able to complete and obtain a watch leader certificate, which is arguably more useful for the kind of sailing I like to do - as crew on a larger vessel. Plus, time in Falmouth meant another visit to the Maritime Museum, the Falmouth Oyster Festival, and watching Master and Commander yet again. Finding time to actually do the dayskipper course might be problematic, though - I think I may have allotted all of my holiday time for next year already.
My return via London took in a SHSL lecture on Mathematics in Canon, which to me was most notable for the point that Professor James Moriarity was most distinguished for a treatise on binominal theorem, which had of course been discovered by one Sir Isaac Newton, over a centrury prior. Does anyone else see the ripe possibilities for a crossover with The Baroque Cycle here? Because I certainly do! I was also pleased to pick up a copy of a biography of Dr Joseph Bell, which will come in handy for writing Murder Rooms for
yuletide this year, as I plan to offer it.
Now, I have an article to finish, a paper proposal to submit, and some stories to finish, not to mention mundane things like grocery shopping and laundry. Hope everyone has been having a good time.
