I just saw an advertisement for a lecture being given at Gresham College London on The Celestial Geography of John Flamsteed. (17th Century History of Mathematics). There is no charge (aside from £5 to get to London), and as an added inducement, they're apparently offering macaroons and Rhenish wine at a reception before hand. This is charmingly period, and I'm interested in the period and the people (yes, the name Isaac Newton was mentioned...).

Unfortunately, that's also the night when the Oxford University Middle Eastern Dance Society is having a dinner at Du Liban. (Cost £12 for starter and main course.) I'm a teacher and sometime officer for the Society, but I'm probably not obligated to go.

Then again, I have a library invigilation shift that I would need to get coverage for if I were to go hie-ing off to London, but not necessarily if I stayed in Oxford for the dinner. (Library Shift, 6-8pm - total pay approximately £10 for a two hour shift.)

This is a free journal, so I have no polling facility, but anyone want to make suggestions? Should I go to London and the lecture, stay in Oxford for the supper, or just work my shift and go home?
